There is no single best software development company in India, only the best fit for you. 12 questions that separate a partner who ships from a good pitch.

How to choose the best software development company in India: 12 questions

The questions that separate a partner who ships from one who sends a good proposal, and what a good answer sounds like.

Most failed projects were chosen badly, not built badly.

When a software project goes wrong, the warning signs were usually visible before signing: a price with no scope, a timeline with no milestones, nobody named to do the work. A short list of questions, asked before you sign, surfaces most of them.

Ask about scope before price.

A quote is only comparable if it describes the same work. Ask each company to list what is included, what is not, and what happens when something changes. The cheapest quote often leaves the expensive parts out.

Ask who will do the work.

The person who sells the project is often not the person who builds it. Ask to speak to whoever will lead the build, and ask what happens if that person leaves halfway.

Ask what you will own at the end.

Source code, hosting accounts, domain names and data should be in your name. A company that keeps them is a company you cannot leave.

Is there a best software development company in India?

Search for the best software development company in India and you will mostly find lists. They are a useful start, but there is no single best company. There is a best fit for your project: the right size of team, a price you can see before you start, people who have built something like it, and terms that leave you owning the result.

A large agency can be the best choice for a bank and the wrong one for a shop that needs a website in a week. The cheapest quote can be the best value or the most expensive mistake. The questions below help you find out which, before you sign.

The 12 questions

Ask every shortlisted company the same set, in writing, and compare the answers side by side:

  • What exactly is in scope, and what is explicitly out of it?
  • Is the price fixed for that scope, and how are changes priced?
  • What are the milestones, and what do I see working at each one?
  • Who will build it, and can I speak to them before signing?
  • Can I see live work similar to mine, and speak to the client who owns it?
  • Who owns the source code, the hosting account, the domain and the data?
  • Where will the code live while it is being built, and can I see it?
  • How is testing done, and who checks it before I do?
  • What support is included after launch, and for how long?
  • What does support cost after that, per month or per request?
  • What will you need from my team, and how much of our time?
  • What happens if either of us wants to stop halfway?

What good answers sound like

Good answers are specific and written down. A good scope names screens, reports and integrations rather than saying “complete solution”. A good milestone is something you can click, not a percentage of progress. A good ownership answer puts the repository, the cloud account and the domain in your name from the first day.

Watch for answers that move the risk onto you without saying so: an hourly rate with no estimate, a fixed price with a scope too vague to hold anyone to, or “unlimited revisions” that in practice means unlimited delay.

Red flags worth walking away from

Any one of these is reason to slow down:

  • No written scope, or a scope copied from a template that does not mention your business
  • Pressure to sign quickly, or a discount that expires in a day
  • No working examples you can open yourself
  • Reluctance to put code and accounts in your name
  • Full payment upfront for a project longer than a few weeks

Where to find a shortlist

Build a shortlist of three to five companies from more than one place: review sites such as Clutch and GoodFirms, Google reviews on each company’s Business Profile, and recommendations from people who have had software built. Then open the live work each company shows you and ask to speak to the client who owns it.

If price matters most, look for companies that publish their prices, so you can compare before the first call. Our price list shows a starting price for every package, and our guides to affordable websites and affordable apps show the lowest-cost routes.

How we answer them

We publish a starting price for every package on our price list, and after a 15-minute call you get a fixed, written proposal that lists what is in and out of scope. If you are not sure what to build yet, the Tech Strategy Consultation at ₹3,000 covers build-versus-buy and a roadmap in two sessions. Our build vs buy framework and custom software cost guide cover the same ground in writing.

FAQ

Which is the best software development company in India?

There is no single best company for every project. The best one for you has built something similar, gives a fixed price for a written scope, names who will do the work, and puts the code, domain and accounts in your name. Ask every shortlisted company the same 12 questions and compare the answers.

Is the cheapest software company in India a good choice?

It can be, if the quote is complete. Check what is out of scope, how changes are priced, who owns the code and accounts, and what support costs after launch. A low quote that leaves these out often costs more by the end.

How do I check a software company before hiring it?

Open live work it has built, speak to a client who owns that work, read its reviews on Google and sites such as Clutch, and ask for a written scope and fixed price before paying anything beyond a first milestone.
