Freelancer, agency or fixed-price studio: who should build your website or app?

Freelancer, agency or fixed-price studio? How each one prices, what can go wrong, and which fits a small business website or app in India.

Freelancer, agency or fixed-price studio: who should build your website or app?

Three ways to get a website or app built

When a small business in India wants a website or an app, the choice usually comes down to three kinds of builder: a freelancer, an agency, or a small studio that sells fixed-price packages. Each can do good work. They differ in how they price, who does the work and what happens when something goes wrong.

Hiring a freelancer

A freelancer is often the lowest quote, and a good one can be excellent value. You talk to the person who writes the code, and decisions are quick.

  • Works well for: a simple site with a clear scope, when you can check the work yourself
  • Watch for: one person means one point of failure. If they fall ill, get busy or move on, the project stops
  • Ask: who else can take over if you are unavailable, and will the code and accounts be in my name?

Hiring an agency

An agency brings a team: design, development, testing and project management. That costs more, and on larger projects it is often worth it.

  • Works well for: larger builds that need several skills at once and a formal process
  • Watch for: the people on the sales call are not always the people who build. Hourly billing with no estimate can grow quickly
  • Ask: who exactly will work on my project, and is the price fixed for the scope?

A fixed-price studio

A studio that sells packages sits in between. Each package is a set scope with a published price, and the final price is fixed in writing before work starts.

  • Works well for: small and growing businesses that want to know the cost upfront and own what is built
  • Watch for: a package that does not quite match your needs. Ask what changes, and what that costs, before you sign
  • Ask: what is out of scope, and how are changes priced?

How to decide

Write down three things before you talk to anyone: the one job the site or app must do, your budget, and the date you need it. Then ask each option the same questions in writing and compare the answers. Our 12 questions to ask a development company work for freelancers and agencies alike.

Whoever you choose, the same rules protect you: a written scope, a fixed price for that scope, milestones you can click, and the domain, code and accounts in your name from the first day.

FAQ

Is a freelancer or an agency cheaper in India?

A freelancer usually quotes less because there is no team or overhead to pay for. An agency costs more but brings design, testing and project management. A fixed-price studio publishes its prices, so you can compare before you talk to anyone.

What is the biggest risk with a freelancer?

Depending on one person. If they become unavailable, the project can stop. Keep the code, domain and hosting in your own name so another developer can take over.

How do I compare quotes from different builders?

Send every builder the same written brief and the same questions, then compare scope, what is excluded, ownership, support and how changes are priced, not only the total.
